Mini-lesson on paraphrasing
Class Warm-up:
Your group will be given three small sheets of sheets of paper; written on each will be one of the following phrases. Your group should write your best paraphrase for each phrase. Once these are complete we will share paraphrases and discuss the unique difficulties of this task.
Parking by permit only
The following steps can be done in your project groups, or on your own.
First:
Watch and take notes on the paraphrasing video:

Second:
Find the lyrics to a song of your choice (school appropriate, of course). Email the link to Ms. Hadid at [email protected] .
Third:
Chose one of the following reviews. Skim the text closely enough to get a feel for the review.
Select two passages that include author’s opinion, and one that does not. Copy the original text, then write an effective paraphrase for each (follow the advice given in the paraphrasing video). Have these signed off.
Fourth:
Collect your printed page of song lyrics from Ms. Hadid. Divide up the stanzas (or verses) between group members. Label each with the appropriate name. You may use scissors to cut these apart, if you prefer. Paraphrase each line of your stanza (or verse). For this exercise you will need to take the songwriter’s words literally, even if s/he seems to mean them figuratively.
